The Origins of Angels, Demons, Lucifer and their powers from the Bible

The term demons is mentioned over eighty times in the New Testament. Angels are God’s messengers who minister to God’s people. They are spirit beings with constraining limitations.

Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

The Angels  are part of God’s very good creation. Considering that the totality of CEEATION was “very good”  a

nd God’s nature is the very essence of goodness,  we can logically conclude God did not create demons. They slicked on the scene sometime after the World was created. We must understand God neither invented nor inspired evil; it grew apart from him.

Revelation 12:3-4 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns an

d seven crowns on its heads. Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born.

Revelation 12:7-9 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

These scriptures provide insights into the Origins of demons and evil itself. Evil entered our World when Satan and his angels dete

rmined in their hearts to oppose the plans of Almighty God. Demons are fallen Angels. They are Satan’s servants committed to his plan t

o thwart the plan of God.

Genesis 2:8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

God created earth for man.

Ezekiel 28:12 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Ezekiel 28:14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

This passage reveals that Lucifer ( also referred to as The King of Tyre) had been in Eden and had been the ” anointed cherub who covers” with access to the Holy Mountain of God.

Ezekiel 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they w

ere prepared.

This scripture suggests Lucifer was created as an instrument of praise with ” timbrels ” and ” pipes”. He has been given a special distinct commission from God to Minister unto Him and cover His glory with music through worship and praise. Lucifer was a walking orchestra. What’s more this spectacular angel was brilliantly ornamented with every precious stone. In all his radiance, however Lucifer developed a fatal flaw: he became prideful.

Ezekiel 28:15-16 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

Isaiah 14:12-15 How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.

Lucifer became Satan. He was created perfectly,  his inner iniquity and violence led him to sin. Lucifer was created by God with one attribute exactly like you and I, he had freedom to choose. Lucifer could have chosen humble obedience; instead he chose prideful rebellion.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Warns us, Pride turned an Angel into devil – Pride.

Revelation 12, These stars are fallen Angels would have shared all the common characteristics  of God’s faithful Angels, however apon joining Satan’s rebel army, demons  perverted their created purpose. They knew God as their creator but they defied His Authority.

They were given boundaries but they did not keep their proper domain. They were ordained to be God’s messengers but they chose to obstruct His message instead.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;

Fallen and imprisoned Angels – Scripture point to demonic activities within our World, yet not all demons are free to roam. Peter makes passing reference to imprisoned angels in the context of warning false teachers.

Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

The key to understanding imprisoned angels is the phrase “who did not keep their proper domain”.

Origins of the Nephilim

Angels are distinctly different from humans. They were created on a different day and for different purposes. Angels have certain characteristics, one of which is that they are invariably masculine. They have clearly defined roles. Angels are permitted to materialize selectively and strategically if suits God’s purpose.

Genesis 6:1-2 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.

Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Scriptures indicates a portion of Satan’s fallen Angels failed to keep their proper domain by materializing and interacting with humans in ways angels were never meant to do.

Job 38:4-7 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

The morning stars are best interpreted as angels. We also know that mankind was not yet created when God laid the cornerstone of the earth,  so this reference to ” sons of God” is another reference to angels, which means the sons of God in the Genesis 6 are also angels. The sons of God were fallen Angels. When those masculine beings saw the daughters of men, they were filled with lust and the angels cohabited with the women. This resulted in the offspring that were half Angelic and half human who were also known as Nephilim.

God’s Judgement of Nephilim and their Unholy Heritage.

This violation of God’s prescribed boundaries grieved Him so deeply that He decided to immediately send a flood to destroy the whole earth and all face of those unholy unions. This is the flood of Noah’s day in which God saved only eight souls through the ark, eight souls who were from a godly line and not a product of angelic debauchery.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;

The other part of the story is that the offending angels were cast down to hell and delivered into chains of darkness. God judged the earth and the aberrant angels to permanently remove them from men’s domain.

Fallen and Free Angels

Earth is free from the influence of fallen  and imprisoned Angels, but fallen and free angels prowl around as demons creating havoc in our World today. We can identify three key objectives of demons in Satan’s subversive plan:

  1. Demons deceive people
  2. Demons tempted people
  3. Demons destroy people

Fallen and Free Demons deceive people

Genesis 3:4-5 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Demons have sought to deceive people since the Garden of Eden. Satan, clouted as a serpent, duping Eve into eating fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The serpent effected this deception by challenging God’s goodness and purpose: The first sentence Satan directly denied God’s truth and He made disobedience seem desirable. From the very creation of man fallen Angels have been hell-bent on changing as much of mankind to the pits of hell as they possibly can.

*Demons masquerading as God’s faithful Angels,  have even given rise to false religions.

* in the year 610 the oppressive religion of Islam was born when Muhammad received the contents of the Koran in a series visions from someone he believed to be the angel Gabriel.

*Twelve centuries later the deceptive cult of Mormonism arose when and angelic being called Maroni supposedly connected Joseph Smith with the book of Mormon.

* Easy salvation and false doctrine were formed.

Humans were created for worship, and demons understand that. They don’t try to prevent us from worshiping: instead they try to change the object of our worship to something other than Almighty God.

Fallen and Free Demons Tempt People.

Looking at serpent and Eve in the Garden of Eden Satan’s deception was coupled with temptation. Not only did he deceive her about the outcome of disobeying God’s command, he enticed her with the suggestion that eating the fruit would make her more like God.

In Isaiah 14 – When we see the five “I will ” of Satan recorded, Satan’s sin was rooted in a desire to “be like most High “.

Satan knows the tempting power of Pride.

Leviticus 17:7 They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols to whom they prostitute themselves. This is to be a lasting ordinance for them and for the generations to come.’

Deuteronomy 32:17 They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God— gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your ancestors did not fear.

2 Chronicles 11:15 when he appointed his own priests for the high places and for the goat and calf idols he had made.

Psalms 106:37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods.

Zechariah 13:2 “On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the land, and they will be remembered no more,” declares the LORD Almighty. “I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.

Demons strongly associated with idolatry and immorality throughout scriptures. At least five times the Bible, describes demon worship that goes so far as to include the people of Israel sacrificing their sons and daughters to demons. Repeatedly the book of Proverbs juxtaposes the wisdom of God and obedience to God with immorality that leads to destruction particularly chapter 2 and 5.

Ezekiel 23:7-9 She gave herself as a prostitute to all the elite of the Assyrians and defiled herself with all the idols of everyone she lusted after. She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt, when during her youth men slept with her, caressed her virgin bosom and poured out their lust on her. “Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, the Assyrians, for whom she lusted.

The essence of idolatry is loving something whatever it may be more than loving God. Idolatry is lusting after something apart from God. Just as a husband or wife experts fidelity from their spouse,  God expects our faithfulness.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Corinthians 10:14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

The temptation associated with idolatry and immorality is so strong that they are the only two sins in New Testament from which we are told to Flee.

Fallen and Free Demons Destroy People.

Demons attempt to deceive and tempt us for one reason: they want to destroy us. Their end game is to keep us from enjoying eternity in heaven.

**- One alarming tactic fallen Angels uses to keep people in bandage is demon possession ( amadlozi or midzimu).

In the New Testament there are many accounts of such possessions.

Here is a quick overview of the effects as recorded by Scriptures:

Deafness and mutism – Luke 11:14, Mark 9:25.

Convulsion  – Mark 1:24

Fierceness – Matthew 8:28.

Falling into fire and water – Matthew 17:15.

Foaming at the mouth  – Luke 9:39.

Gnashing of teeth  – Mark 9: 18.

Extraordinary strength  – Mark 5: 4.

Demons possessed people local, in our families, Africa, India, America, China all over the world have incredible power, a demon has over that person, transforms them into a totally different kind of person with great strengths and fierceness.

*** I have seen it in my family. Years back when I was young my father had those celebrations (ukuthethela amadlozi) I would watch people being turned to something else by demons. They completely change the way they walk or talk, what they eat and drink. It also happened to my late father he got possessed, became something else he climbed the tree, and fell badly.

It happens a lot with “apostol or zion churches”, people getting possessed terming demons to be a “prophet” instead of Sangoma. The young “prophets” wants power and to be famous, that leads them to magnify their powers by including the tricks. I experienced more with these groups of people as at some point I was part of them.

GOOD NEWS ABOUT DEMONS

I don’t believe any true repented and baptized Christian can ever be possessed by demons and I will give three reasons why.

  1. The Spirit of God permanently indwells in them.

1 Corinthians 6:14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.

Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

The moment a person repents and gets baptized in Christ the Holy Spirit takes up residence in them.

The person is permanently indwelt by the Spirit of God.

1 John 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

John helps us understand why demon possession is scripturally impossible  for a Christian.

*** The Holy Spirit  is stronger than any demonic being, including Satan himself.

It’s just simple.

  1. There is not Single instance of a Christian being described as demon-possessed in the New Testament.

Not even one, infect there are no instructions given to believers for casting out Satan. Instead, we are instructed to resist him and he will Flee from us.

  1. Demon possession is distinctly different from demon influence.

The passage from James 4 reflects that Satan bothers us everyday. We wouldn’t have to resist Satan if he left us alone. We can be sure he will bother us but we have confidence in the power of the Holy Spirit to help us resist and overcome our adversary. While faithful Angels minister to us – fallen Angels surround us – seeking any opportunity to deceive us, Tempt, or destroy the unwary.

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

However God has given his children guidance and encouragement for living victoriously as we wrestle against the rulers of the darkness of the age.

What can I do about Demons?

God has already done the heavy lifting for us. When Jesus Christ ascended from the grave, He conquered every demon, every scheme, every deception  that could assault God’s people.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Romans 10:9-10 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

The first step is to appropriate that power in our lives which is easier than you might imagine. Repent be baptized, confess your sins, and live by the word of God. Once salvation is secure in Christ, God’s limitless power is available to sustain us. Now that we know the truth about Demons that doesn’t make it easier.

** I have been tempted daily specially about challenges I face daily about finances, taking care of my loved ones.
